The Proper Cleaning
Method for Binoculars |
Give your binoculars a good cleaning periodically to keep your
optics in top form. Some great cleaning products will help get the job
done right. Things to have on hand for a thorough cleaning are a
Soft-Tek microfiber cloth, UltraBrush or a high quality
blower brush, canned air such as Dust-Pro or Vari-Air,
premium grade lens tissue, and a specially formulated cleaner for
high quality lenses such as Formula MC or LensBrite.
First with the Soft-Tek microfiber cloth carefully wipe down the
outside of the binoculars to remove any large clumps of dust or dirt.
The Soft-Tek microfiber cloth has triangular fibers to trap the
dirt within the cloth. Avoid the lenses at this time. Don’t forget to
wipe down the case and straps.
Start with the large optics. Using the UltraBrush or a high
quality blower brush, carefully brush away any large dirt or dust
particles. Canned air (Dust Pro or Vari-Air) can also be
used. Be sure to hold the can upright.
Tear a couple of sheets of the premium grade lens tissue from the
booklet. Fold the tissue sheets together into quarters. Apply a drop of
the lens cleaning fluid to a corner of the folded lens tissue. Start in
the center of the lens and with a circular motion carefully wipe the
lens from the center to the edges. Repeat as necessary. Continue to
clean until the lens is completely dry. Replace the lens caps.
Formula MC lens cleaning solution is safe for all lenses, glass
or plastics. It has been expressly designed for multi-coated scientific
lenses It offers superior cleaning action while being gentle on softer
lens coatings. This is a non-residue cleaner. Formula MC has been
tested, approved and purchased for use on manned space flights by
Lockheed Martin and NASA.
LensBrite lens cleaning solution is also safe for all lenses,
glass or plastics. It combines superior cleaning action with anti-fog
properties. LensBrite leaves a very thin film covering the lens.
This provides the anti-fog action without affecting the optical
properties..
The smaller lenses are cleaned in similar manner. Using the
UltraBrush or a high quality blower brush, carefully brush away any
large dirt or dust particles. Canned air (Dust Pro or Vari-Air)
can also be used. Be sure to hold the can upright.
Tear a single sheet of the premium grade lens tissue from the
booklet. Fold the tissue sheet into eighths. Apply a drop of the lens
cleaning fluid to a corner of the folded lens tissue. Start in the
center of the lens and with a circular motion carefully wipe the lens
from the center to the edges. Repeat as necessary. Continue to clean
until the lens is completely dry. Replace the lens caps.
Finally, with the lens caps in place give the binocular another wipe off
with the Soft-Tek microfiber cloth. The Soft-Tek
microfiber cloth is chemically free. When it gets dirty, simply wash it
in your washing machine without fabric softener and it will remain
chemically free and ready for another cleaning. |
